Gillett Scores 28; Mats Still Lose
Lakewood~After winning the first two games in league, the Matadores seemed to be off to a good start.
So much for that.
After winning its first two against John Glenn and Bellflower, the new-look Mats have looked a little troubled lately.
Last night, Conner Gillett scored 28 poiints, but the turnover-prone Mats could not keep up with the Monsoons of Mayfair, losing 72-59. This followed a difficult loss to Artesia at home two nights earlier.

Exclusive!
Las Vegas~After winning its first two games, the La Mirada boys basketball team lost this evening, bowing to Coronado in the third round, 56-55 in a heart-break thriller, at the 2009 Prep Championships in Las Vegas.

Luatua, who helped lead La Mirada to a CIF Football Championship (on both sides of the ball), just two weeks ago, has become a major player in the Mats basketball plans. The 6' 3" 290 lb. junior uses his wide body and soft shooting touch to his advantage.
Suburban League Football 2009 Review; 2010 Preview
Suburban League Playoff Finals/Results
La Mirada 49 Garden Grove 27: Well the game started off as bad as it could for the Matadores, because they couldn’t find a way early to stop the high powered offense of Garden Grove that was led by QB Sean Young. That was, until Young was put out of the game for good. Then, Garden Grove seemed to have no contingency for Young getting hurt, and where unable to find any offense to keep their lead. The Matadores offense got going behind their massive offensive line and the hard running of running backs JT Torres, and Max Gama. The Matadores defense stepped up, and the offense rolled off 42 unanswered points. It was not until garbage time that Garden Grove scored another TD. They fought valiantly as they could, and did a great job honoring the memory of Kevin Telles who passed away earlier this season. The Matadore offensive line has done a great job this year, paving the way for their running game.
Next Season Preview

Key Returners: While several players played varsity, none of them look to be major contributors next season.

La Mirada Theatre Presents “Navidad en Mexico”
La Mirada~On Saturday, December 19th, La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts will become a rainbow of shimmering color and a festival of vibrant sound as the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano brings sparkle to the holidays with its award-winning spectacular, NAVIDAD EN MEXICO.
An award-winning Christmas production featuring 30 impressive dancers and 10 musicians, a singer and a lariat roper, this ‘south-of-the-border’ celebration is laden with seasonal accents such as a traditional Christmas processional (posada), Mexican holiday songs (villancicos), a visit from the Three Wise Men, a festive piñata scene, and a vibrant holiday finale performed in the spirit of a true mariachi fiesta.
Besides its seasonal flavor, however, NAVIDAD EN MEXICO also gives the audience a whirlwind tour of the country’s distinct cultural regions. Animated dances executed with shakers and machetes, from Mexico’s central and Pacific coast regions, stand in contrast to sensuous Caribbean dances from the country’s Gulf coast areas. Graceful harvest and courtship dances from the country’s southern states are juxtaposed with the fast-paced footwork (zapateado) of male dancers and energetic skirt whirling (faldeo) of the female dancers, both so typical of the Mexican folkloric dance repertoire.
And not to be missed are the festive pieces from Jalisco, in the banda and mariachi styles, which create a party-like atmosphere of popular music, song and movement that characterize Mexico’s most cherished cultural exports.
